FAA A&P · WHAT IT COSTS · READ FROM THE PUBLISHED FEES

What an FAA A&P costs, line by line

The FAA charges nothing for the mechanic certificate itself. What costs money is the testing. Each of the 3 A&P knowledge tests is $175 through PSI Services, LLC, so $525 if you pass all three the first time, and a retest is the full fee again. The oral and practical fee is set by the examiner, not the FAA, and the four published schedules we read ran about $500 to $700 a section. School tuition is the one figure nobody caps. No authority publishes a total, and this page does not invent one.

01 THE WRITTEN TESTSPSI SERVICES, LLC · VOUCHER PRICE

What the A&P written tests cost

The knowledge tests are delivered by PSI Services, LLC under the FAA’s Airman Certificate Testing Service contract, and PSI sets the price. The FAA does not set it and does not receive it. PSI puts no walk-up price for a single test on any public page: its booking site is an application you have to log into, with no fee page behind it. The $175 below is the price PSI publishes per voucher on its own FAA testing programmes page, plus applicable tax, read there on 19 August 2026, and two independent secondary sources list the same figure for one test. Confirm it at checkout.

  • $175What PSI Services, LLC lists for one A&P knowledge test, whichever of the three it is. It is the voucher price, in US dollars.PSI
  • $525The three A&P written tests together, General, Airframe, Powerplant, if each is passed the first time. Arithmetic, not a published figure: 3 times $175.DERIVED
  • $175What a retest of any A&P written test costs: the full fee again, after the 30 day wait § 65.19 sets, or sooner with an instructor’s signed statement.§ 65.19
  • $0What the FAA charges for the mechanic certificate itself. It says so plainly on its own pages: the certificate is free, the testing is not.FAA

The rules around the tests, the 24 month window, what a retest takes and what to bring on the day, are on the knowledge tests page. What is on each test is on its own page: FAA A&P General, FAA A&P Airframe, FAA A&P Powerplant.

02 THE ORAL AND PRACTICALSET BY THE EXAMINER

What the A&P oral and practical costs

The oral and practical is given by a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME), and the examiner sets the fee. The FAA publishes no schedule and caps nothing. So the only honest number is the one your examiner gives you when you ask.

What we can say is what we read. Four published school and examiner schedules, read in August 2026, ran from about $500 to $700 a section, or roughly $1,200 to $1,600 for a full A&P with all 6 tests in one sitting. That is four data points, not a price list, and it is filed as soft in our own verify register for that reason.

SOFT Four published school and examiner schedules, read 19 August 2026. The FAA principle, that the examiner sets the fee, is confirmed; the dollar figures are not endorsed by the FAA.

What actually happens in the room, the 31 projects and how the oral questions are counted, is on the oral and practical page.

03 THE ROUTE IN§ 65.77

What it costs to become eligible for the A&P

Before any test there is eligibility, and the two routes cost very different things. Graduating a Part 147 school costs whatever that school charges in tuition, which is commercial, uncapped and different at every school. Documenting your own experience costs no fee at all, only time: 30 months of work on both airframes and powerplants for a full A&P, or 18 for one rating, counted in calendar months the FAA will not let you compress.

Which route fits you is the subject of the school or experience page, and how the months are counted and proved is on the experience page.

If the fees are the first thing you have looked at, the order they come in is on how to get your FAA A&P mechanic certificate, which is the route these costs hang off.

04 WHAT NOBODY PUBLISHESAND WHY WE DO NOT EITHER

Why there is no total on this page

Three things you will see quoted as fixed numbers are not published by anyone with the authority to fix them:

  • Any single "total cost to get an A&P" figure published by the FAA. There is none.
  • What a Part 147 school charges in tuition; it is commercial and uncapped.
  • What any individual examiner charges, until you ask them.

So a page that tells you “an A&P costs $X” has added a published fee to a guess. Add the lines above up for your own route instead. For most people on the experience route, the written tests are the only fixed cost until the examiner names theirs.

05 COMMON QUESTIONSFAQ

Questions people ask about the A&P cost

Q.01

How much does the A&P written test cost?

$175 per test, paid to PSI Services, LLC, which delivers the FAA’s knowledge tests under contract. There are 3 written tests for a full A&P (General, Airframe and Powerplant), so $525 if you pass each one the first time. The $175 is PSI’s published voucher price; a school that buys vouchers in bulk may pass on a different figure.

Q.02

How much does the whole A&P cost?

Nobody can tell you, and this page does not try. The FAA publishes no total. The parts that have published prices are the 3 written tests at $175 each. The oral and practical fee is set by the examiner you book, and school tuition is commercial and uncapped. Add those up for your own route and you have your number; anyone quoting one figure for everybody has made it up.

Q.03

Does the FAA charge for the A&P certificate?

No. The FAA charges $0 for the mechanic certificate itself and says so on its own mechanic pages. Every dollar on the way to an A&P goes to a testing contractor, an examiner, or a school. Nothing goes to the FAA.

Q.04

How much is the A&P oral and practical?

Whatever your Designated Mechanic Examiner charges. The FAA sets no fee and publishes no schedule. The four published school and examiner schedules we read in August 2026 ran from about $500 to $700 a section, or roughly $1,200 to $1,600 for a full A&P, and that is four data points, not a price list. Ask the examiner before you book.

Q.05

Do you pay again to retake an A&P written test?

Yes, the full $175, every time. Under 14 CFR § 65.19 you also wait 30 days after a fail before you can sit it again, unless someone who holds the certificate and rating you are after signs a statement that they have given you the extra instruction. The fee is the smaller cost. The failed report has to be surrendered, and every ACS code you missed comes back as a question at your oral.
