FREE · NO CARD · SPECIMEN QUESTIONS
Free FAA A&P practice test
Two real questions from the bank, answered on this page, in the two formats you will meet: multiple choice with 3 answer choices like the test, and a gap you type from memory. The free plan then opens every one of our 44 subjects, covering all 40 ACS areas, at 25 new questions a day each, with the reason behind every answer and the handbook chapter it came from.
Questions written to FAA-S-ACS-1, the current Airman Certification Standards, effective 21 September 2022.
Answer these two FAA A&P questions here
Both come from the same subject, Mechanic Privileges and Limitations, so the two cards read as one paper. Each one names the file and the line it was read from, which is the difference between a specimen and a mock-up.
Which form does an applicant use for a mechanic certificate or added rating?
An applicant applies for a mechanic certificate or added rating on FAA Form 8610-2, the Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application. It is easy to confuse with FAA Form 8610-1, but that form is the application for inspection authorization. (FAA-H-8083-30B, ch. 13, p. 13-1)
The certificate issued while the FAA reviews your documents and prepares the real one is a certificate.
Pass the oral and practical and the examiner hands you FAA Form 8060-4, a temporary airman certificate. It carries the full privileges of the rating and it is good for 120 days, or until the Airmen Certification Branch issues the permanent card, whichever comes first. (FAA-H-8083-30B, ch. 13)
The three FAA A&P tests, and what the bank holds for each
Notice the numbers are not even. Airframe and Powerplant carry more questions in the same 2 hours General gets, and that is the most useful thing to know before you book. Each test has its own page with everything that is on it.
- FAA A&P GeneralAMG · 60 Q · 2 H · 70%
12 ACS subject areas. 4,071 questions in the bank, filed in 14 study subjects.
- FAA A&P AirframeAMA · 100 Q · 2 H · 70%
15 ACS subject areas. 5,614 questions in the bank, filed in 19 study subjects.
- FAA A&P PowerplantAMP · 100 Q · 2 H · 70%
13 ACS subject areas. 3,450 questions in the bank, filed in 11 study subjects.
If you have not worked out the whole route yet, how to get your FAA A&P mechanic certificate covers it on one page: what you need before you can test, the 3 written tests, and the oral and practical after them.
What free opens, and what it does not
Every subject, from the first day. 25 new questions and 25 gaps a day in each, which across our 44 subjects is more than anyone works through in a sitting. Those 44 cover all 40 ACS subject areas. No clock, so you stop when you want. No card, and nothing that runs out.
What free does not open is Pro’s three things: unlimited practice questions and gaps; unlocks 3 timed mock papers per test, one sitting each; opens Progress, with your readiness projected to test day. The price is on the pricing section, and it is cheaper than one retest.
Before you start
Q.01Is the FAA A&P practice test free?
Yes, and it is a plan, not a trial. The free plan opens every one of our 44 subjects, which cover all 40 ACS subject areas, with 25 new questions and 25 fill-in-the-gap items a day in each, with the reason behind every answer and the handbook chapter it came from. It needs no card and it does not expire.
Q.02Are these real FAA A&P questions?
No, and we do not claim they are. Every question here is written by us from the FAA handbooks to the 40 subject areas of FAA-S-ACS-1, with 3 answer choices like the tests, and each one names the handbook chapter it came from so you can check it. Nothing is copied from an FAA test.
Q.03How many FAA A&P practice questions are there?
12,355 in practice, out of a bank of 13,135, plus 11,807 fill-in-the-gap items. The other 780 are held back for the timed mock papers, so a mock is never a question you have already worked.
Q.04Which FAA A&P test should I practice first?
General. The FAA's own direction is General first, then Airframe and/or Powerplant, and General is the one test every applicant takes whichever rating they are after. You take it once and never again when you add the second rating.
Q.05How many questions are on the real FAA A&P tests?
260 across the 3 tests, in 6 hours: General is 60 questions in 2 hours, Airframe is 100 questions in 2 hours, Powerplant is 100 questions in 2 hours. The passing score is 70% on each, and the codes you miss are printed on your report and come back at the oral.
