FAA-S-ACS-1 · SECTION I · AMG

The FAA A&P General knowledge test

60 questions, 2 hours, 70% to pass, drawn from the 12 General subject areas of the Airman Certification Standards. It earns no rating on its own. General is tested separately even though nobody holds a General rating, and everyone takes it exactly once. The ground every mechanic stands on, whichever rating you are after: electricity, weight and balance, materials, corrosion, the regulations and the paperwork.

Checked against the current regulations on 19 August 2026.

What the A&P General test is

  • 60QUESTIONSscored
  • 2 hALLOTTEDincluding validation items
  • 70%TO PASS14 CFR § 65.17(c)
  • AMGTEST CODEhow you register

The FAA’s own title for it is Aviation Mechanic General, and AMG is the code you register under. Every question is multiple choice with 3 options and one correct answer, and each question stands on its own. At 120 seconds a question, General gives you the most time of the three, and that is the only way it is the easy one.

The rules around all three tests (the 24 month window, retests, what you may take into the room) are on the knowledge tests page.

02 THE SUBJECT AREASSECTION I · A TO L

12 subject areas, and where each is tested

These are the ACS’s own subject areas, taken from its subject pages. Each one breaks into three kinds of elements, and the kind decides where that element shows up:

  • K for Knowledge: the written test and the oral
  • R for Risk Management: the oral and the practical
  • S for Skill: the practical only
The 12 subject areas of Section I of FAA-S-ACS-1, with the ACS element code for each.

Those codes are not decoration. Every question you miss on the A&P written test is reported against its code, and the examiner reads those codes before your oral to decide what to ask you.

03 WHAT WE HOLD FOR ITTHE BANK

Our A&P General practice questions

4,071 questions across 14 subject banks. Every one is multiple choice with three options and a written explanation, and every question written from the FAA handbooks shows the chapter and page it came from. There are also fill-in-the-gap items in every subject. Those test recall instead of recognition, the same way the oral does.

Our banks are filed under their own headings, not the ACS’s, because they were written to study from, not to test from. Every ACS subject area is covered. Some are covered across more than one of our banks.

What follows the A&P written

Passing this test earns you the right to be asked about it out loud. General carries 9 practical projects at the oral and practical, each graded pass or fail, with 2 examiner questions attached. The oral runs from 4 questions if your written was clean, up to 22 if you barely passed, because every code you missed adds one.

That is why a 70% here is not the finish line it looks like. The full picture is on the oral and practical page.

06 COMMON QUESTIONSFAQ

Questions people actually ask

Q.01

How many questions are on the A&P General test?

60, with 2 hours allowed and 70% to pass. The test code is AMG. Unscored validation questions are added on top of that count. They do not affect your score, but the time allowed includes answering them, so you may see more questions on screen than 60.

Q.02

What subjects are on the A&P General test?

12 subject areas, from Section I of FAA-S-ACS-1: Fundamentals of Electricity and Electronics; Aircraft Drawings; Weight and Balance; Fluid Lines and Fittings; Aircraft Materials, Hardware, and Processes; Ground Operations and Servicing; Cleaning and Corrosion Control; Mathematics; Regulations, Maintenance Forms, Records, and Publications; Physics for Aviation; Inspection Concepts and Techniques; Human Factors. That standard is incorporated into 14 CFR §§ 65.75 and 65.79 by reference, so it carries the force of the regulation instead of sitting beside it as guidance.

Q.03

Does the A&P General test have an oral and practical too?

Yes, one of each. The oral and practical is six tests, not two: an oral and a practical for every section. General carries 9 practical projects, each graded pass or fail, with 2 examiner questions attached. The oral runs from 4 questions if your written was clean, up to 22 if you barely passed.

Q.04

Do I have to take the A&P General test if I only want one rating?

Yes. General is tested on its own even though it is not a rating you can hold. Everyone takes it, whichever ratings they are after. The good news is that you take it once and never again: FAA Order 8080.6H is explicit that if an applicant already holds a mechanic certificate with either rating, the general test must not be administered when they add the other.

Q.05

Does the FAA say to take A&P General first?

Its public page does: take the General knowledge test first, then the Airframe and/or Powerplant test. The regulation sets no order. What it requires is authorization. So treat "General first" as the FAA's direction, which is what a test center will follow, not as something illegal to do differently.
